Setting Up - Versions 3.x.x and 4.x.x

  • Installing and setting up WSJT - JT6M
First you'll need to download WSJT software (freeware) from  K1JT's web site  Installed with Ver.4.7.0 is a pdf file
WSJT_User_470.pdf - please read this and familiarise yourself with its contents.
  • Options
Once installed, you will need to set-up your station parameters. See screen shot below for typical settings. These show EU defaults. You will probably only need to change "My call" and "Grid locator" and click "EU Defaults" button (if in EU). You may also set the Audio Output to Left, Right or Both channels (both recommended).

The Transmit/Receive timings (T/R Period) can be changed from the default 30 seconds to other periods but should only be changed if your qso partner agrees to do the same.

Note that WSJT Version 4.7.0 has correct RRRRRRRR +Call for TX4 message. Earlier versions of WSJT had less RRR's but IARU Region 1 MS procedure defines 8 x R + Call should be sent. These is nothing to stop you from changing this or any other message, however the correct procedure should be used for messages TX1 through TX4.
JT6M Options

NA Defaults - wrong for EU
EU Defaults - correct for EU

  • COM Port- PTT Control
You will also need to set the correct COM port that you are using to control your tx transmit line. This is shown in next screen shot. Next you will need to select (from Setup menu) either DTR or RTS for PTT switching. If unsure check both.

Setup Options

  • Sound Card
You will need to ensure that your sound card is correctly set. Ensure that the Line In or Mic In channel is not muted or channel disabled in the Sound Card utility. Usually found via Control Panel/Sound or Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices depending on your PC's operating system (assuming MS Windows based OS). Fortunately these controls can also be accessed via WSJT menu - Setup/Adjust RX Volume Control and Setup/Adjust TX Volume Control.
Please remember to disable ALL other windows sound events before txing JT6M otherwise the sound event could be transmitted too e.g. "you have mail" wav file !. Have a listen on 14.070MHz to PSK31 signals, you very often hear windows wav files !!
If possible, fit a second sound card in your PC and use exclusively for digimodes.
Sample files are installed alongside WSJT - look in the install folder - "WSJT/RxWav/Samples" - there should be a file "AF4O_030524_121600.WAV". Load this into WSJT (File/Open), click decode. Now put you mouse cursor around 12.9 sec position and click. You should see some decoded text of AF4O calling K1JT.
QuickMix - This little application can be used to save your sound card settings and quickly re-instate them should they get altered.  http://www.msaxon.com/quickmix/
  • Spectran
Bundled with WSJT Ver.4.7.0 is Spectran, a program written by Alberto di Bene, I2PHD and Vittorio De Tomasi, IK2CZL. It provides real-time spectral analysis with a "waterfall" display, as well as many other useful features. Please refer to SPECTRAN.pdf file in WSJT install folder for more information. Spectran can be Enabled/Disabled via WSJT Setup menu.
